Write your manuscript. Use 'Read' View to ensure your layout is perfect. If you don't know what a perfect layout looks like, buy a book from Waterstones and mirror the layout. Do not forget the legal page. Be sure to include Author Bio on inside of back cover.
Use Shutterstock or similar for cover page and any other illustrations you might need. You can buy individual images or get a membership. For example, one Shutterstock option costs £20 per month and you can download 10 large photos each month. That's £2 per full-colour illustration. This licensing option covers up to 500,000 copies. After 500,000 copies are printed, you can upgrade your license.
Buy your ISBN numbers and Bar Code. https://www.nielsentitleeditor.com/titleeditor/
I recommend buying 10 ISBNs instead of 1.
Hard copies and e-copies must have separate ISBNs. To sell your book in Waterstones, you must be registered with Nielsen. Nielsen will automatically send your book to Amazon and Waterstones so customers can order copies online.
If you do not have a publisher, you will need to create a Publishing Company under which to publish your books. Choose the name wisely as all ISBNs must be published under this name.
You can start completing the details about your book in Nielsen Title Editor. You will not be able to complete all the fields until your book is printed. Alternatively, you can add book once printing is complete. There's no need to rush.
NOTE: You can change all details about the book EXCEPT THE ISBN. If you enter the wrong ISBN, you cannot change it.
NOTE: For U.S. instructions, please see Sell Your Book at Barnes & Noble | B&N INC (barnesandnobleinc.com)
Once your manuscript is complete, ask different printers for quotes. They will need to know the size of the book (A4, A5, etc) and how many pages, approximately. You should request quotes for different size orders.
NOTE: Bar codes must be an exact size. Ensure printer knows the size.
Once you select your printer, reply to their quote email with the illustration numbers and the printing specs.
For example:
25 copies
Perfect bound A5 Portrait
350 gsm Cover, Soft touch LAM outside covers
Approx. 90 pages
Cream paper, 150 gsm
10 illustrations (sent via WeTransfer)
TIFF bar code attached
Title and Author must be printed on spine
Prior to final print, your printer should send you a printed draft so you can see what your book looks like. Any edits should be made to a WORD DOC that your printer will be able to drop into Adobe.
To adhere to legal traditions, I sent a copy of my book to British Book Deposit WITHIN ONE MONTH of final print. Call 01937 546268 with questions.

Once you receive your gorgeous new book, ensure you log into Nielsen and change publishing status to Active. From that point, customers will be able to order your book on Amazon and Waterstones. Book buyers will be able to order copies directly from Nielsen Global Book Database.
Waterstones has guidelines on their webpage. Scroll right the bottom of the page and find hyperlink for 'Independent Publishers'
NOTE: Tesco and Sainsburys also require you complete a form requesting to trade with them.
You will need to complete an application form to trade with Gardners.
NOTE:
**Gardners advised me that their standard discount price is 60% of RRP. Anything less means Waterstones gets less money. You can adjust your RRP price on Nielsen.
**Return Policy is FIRM SALE. Returns are not accepted.
Once you are accepted by Gardners, they may place an order for physical copies of your book to sell in Waterstones.
From this point, you need to market your book to increase sales. Marketing ideas are available online, such as the "21 Day Marketing Challenge" by IngramSpark. I recommend you start by making audiobooks and uploading to youtube, linking it to your back to your webpage.
